Sudden Loss of Appetite, Sudden Diagnosis of Kidney Disease

This is a personal record of my life with my cat, Mickey, who lives with a chronic illness.

A Sudden Change in Mickey’s Appetite

At the end of April 2025, I noticed something unusual in Mickey’s usual “feed me” pose—it didn’t feel quite right.
Even when I put food in front of him, or offered treats, he didn’t touch anything. For two whole days, he ate almost nothing. Worried, we hurried to the animal hospital for tests.

The results were hard to hear: severe kidney disease and a possible case of uremia. According to the bloodwork, Mickey’s creatinine level was 5.06 mg/dL and BUN (blood urea nitrogen) was 92.5 mg/dL, far above the normal range. At the same time, his weight had dropped from 5.5 kg a year ago to 4.0 kg.

When I saw the numbers and learned that Mickey was now in Stage 4 kidney disease, my mind went blank with shock. I felt overwhelmed by how quickly things had changed, and I couldn’t stop crying with the guilt of not noticing sooner.

A New Beginning Together

Yet in the midst of that shock, I made a choice:
this is not the end of our story.
From that moment, Mickey and I—along with my husband—decided to step forward together. We will walk this new path with hope, with patience, and with as much love as we can give.
